World Hepatitis Day | July 28

Today, July 28, we mark World Hepatitis Day.

The day raises global awareness about hepatitis and calls for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

What to know

Hepatitis affects more than 350 million people worldwide. It is not one disease, but a group of 5 types: A, B, C, D, and E.

- Hepatitis A is usually acute and short-term

- Hepatitis B, C, and D are most likely to become chronic

- Hepatitis E is usually acute but can be dangerous for pregnant women

Many people do not have symptoms in the early stages. An estimated 3 million more people are infected but don’t know it. Routine testing saves lives.

Hepatitis also leads to other serious health issues like cirrhosis and liver cancer, and contributes to 399,000 deaths worldwide each year.

How to observe #WorldHepatitisDay:

1. Get tested for hepatitis. Today, health organizations in 100 countries will offer free screenings.

2. Learn the difference between the 5 types from trusted health sources like the CDC.

3. Support a friend or family member living with hepatitis.

4. Join the conversation online and use #WorldHepatitisDay to spread awareness.

5. Watch educational videos from health organizations to understand prevention.

Quick fact:

July 28 was chosen to honor Nobel Laureate Baruch Samuel Blumberg, discoverer of the hepatitis B virus. World Hepatitis Day was first observed in 2008.

Prevention, testing, and treatment work.

Today, take one step to protect your liver and your health.
